Cars & Coffee

This morning we woke up quite early and caught the 405 south towards Irvine. Our destination was the weekly Cars & Coffee automotive meet. We arrived at crack of dawn and got great first light glimpse of an amazing collection of automotive master pieces. This was our first time attending, but it certainly will not be our last. If you love everything car related, be sure to set your alarm and grab a hot cup of joe to see what shows up next Saturday. For more info, visit the Irvine cars and coffee website here.

Grand Prix of Long Beach

For forty years now, Long Beach has welcomed race fans to enjoy the thrill of racing alongside our shoreline streets. One can hear the howls of mechanical beasts for miles as they viciously tear through the city streets.

This year I (Kevin) was fortunate enough to be involved in a special studies project with CSULB colleagues. This project involved the electrical engineering department as well as the industrial design department in a collaborative effort to conceptualize a vehicle. The concept was dubbed the GOBO (gas or battery operated ) vehicle. It consists of only three wheels, an uncommon platform for a vehicle of this sort. There are two drive trains in the system, the first located on the front of vehicle which is an AC electric engine that outputs power onto the front wheels in the greener EV mode. The second platform  is located at the rear, it will be a gas powered 600cc motorcycle engine that drives the single rear wheel via belt. A full sized test chassis currently exists with a functional electric engine on which tests are performed. The following models are 1/4 life size scale of the actual intended vehicles. These models were built by 2 industrial design classes over a non stop nearly 24-7 period of 2 weeks  the booth display was designed and created by an additional third class. More than 300 studio hours have gone into each model not including the individual man hours that it took to make this a reality. Check out the models and stay tuned to observe the growth of the project throughout the coming months.

Spool

Stones Throw’s very own Hal Williams better known for his stage name as Pyramid Vritra, releases his latest visual for his debut album “Vritra”. Titled “Spool”, the visuals are presented in a truly artistic manner. The video manages to balance a visionary approach of refreshing style and clever aesthetics. There is a equilibrium of calm fluidity amongst a sea of complexity throughout his music. Vritras debut album is available over a variety of mediums ranging from vinyl hard copies to digital platforms at Stones Throw records. It is nice to see progressive musicians approach their craft under their own terms, outside of the norm of the industry. Be sure to follow up and discover what this tasteful artist has to offer.
